Brian Gorelick is Associate Professor of Music and Director of Choral Ensembles at Wake Forest University.  Dr. Gorelick conducts the Wake Forest Concert Choir, the Collegium Musicum Vocal Ensemble, and the Wake Forest Chamber Choir and teaches Introduction to Western Music and Conducting.  Before coming to Wake Forest in 1984, he was Head of Choral Activities at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, choral director and instructor of music theory at Oklahoma City Community College, and directed the University of Wisconsin-Madison Women’s Chorus while in residence as a graduate student under Robert Fountain. He received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Illinois, studying with Charles Leonhard and Harold Decker.  His Master of Music degree in choral conducting is from UW-Madison.  He also holds a Bachelor of Arts in music from Yale University where he directed the Whiffenpoofs men’s chorus in 1974.

Dr. Gorelick served the choral conducting profession as National Secretary and member of the Executive Board of the National Collegiate Choral Organization from 2012-15 and as North Carolina National Board Member from 2011-12. He has also been a member of the Board of Directors of the Wisconsin Choral Directors Association and served as College/University Chair of the North Carolina-ACDA Choral Standards and Repertoire Committee.  He is a member of the American Choral Directors Association, the National Association for Music Education, and the National Collegiate Choral Organization.  Dr. Gorelick was Choral Music Instructor at the West Campus of the North Carolina Governor’s School in 1992. He studied conducting and choral techniques with Donald Neuen at UCLA and choral conducting with William Weinert and Dale Warland at Eastman School of Music.  Dr. Gorelick received the Jaques-Dalcroze Certificate from Ithaca College’s Dalcroze Studies Institute in 1986.  He currently serves as Choral Director for the High Holy Days Services at Temple Emanuel in Winston-Salem.

Dr. Gorelick conducted the Wake Forest Concert Choir on the first international tours of any music department ensemble, performing in Austria in May 2007, in Italy in March 2010, in Ireland in March 2014, again in Italy in March 2016, and in Spain in March 2018.  He also directed the Concert Choir on their CD recording of composer Jeffrey Van’s A Procession Winding Around Me and A Sprig of Rosemary, available at  In April 2011, Dr. Gorelick and the Concert Choir presented the world premiere of Peace, Night,Sleep, commissioned from Seattle composer John Muehleisen. His article “Planning the Perfect Choral Rehearsal” was published in the Music Educators Journal in November 2001.  He has prepared Wake Forest choral ensembles for master classes with The Tallis Scholars, The Rose Ensemble, Anonymous 4, and Cantus and for performances with guest conductors Philippe Entremont, David Hagy, Peter Perret, David Levy, Matthew Troy, Andrew Clark, and Zenaida Romeu.
