Lu Lu was born in Shanghai, China, and started playing Zhongruan at the age of 6. She earned her PhD in Chinese linguistics from University of Wisconsin-Madison, and her research area includes the interface between music and language in Chinese. She is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Wake Forest, and previously taught at the College of William and Mary, University of Iowa and Luther College.

A former member in the Shanghai-Yangpu District Chinese folk music ensemble and Zhongruan soloist in the Confucius Institute of Chinese Opera at Binghamton University Silk Road Performing Group, Lu Lu holds an A Level-10 Zhongruan certificate issued by the Shanghai Conservatory of Music.
