Congratulations to the winners of our 2023 Concerto Competition!

A graduate of Flagler Palm Coast High School under the baton of Mr. John Seth, Adam Waszkiewicz is a third-year student at Wake Forest University who is an honors mathematics and music performance double major.

He began playing the clarinet at the age of twelve in middle school and has been playing since. Since he began, Adam has performed with many honor bands in his home district, local universities, and was a 2020-2021 Florida All-State Band member for the B-flat clarinet. In 2022, Adam was concertmaster for the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles Youth Wind Orchestra Honor Group for their conference in Prague. Adam was a winner for the WFU Department of Music’s Concerto Competitions in 2022 and 2023, winning the second place prize in Fall 2022.

Adam has studied with Dr. Melissa Kindy, Mr. John Sadak, and Dr. Oskar Espina-Ruiz throughout his time in high school and university, as he has been playing the B-flat and E-flat clarinets. Today, Adam sits as the principal clarinetist of the Wake Forest University Symphony Orchestra (WFUSO) and WFU Wind Ensemble. He is the president of the WFUSO student board while continuing to be a Wake Forest University Presidential Scholar for Music.

Second Prize: Katherine Maize, soprano

‘Quando men vo,’ in E Major from La Bohème & ‘Chi il bel sogno de Doretta’ from La Rondine by Giacomo Puccini

Katherine is a second-year undergraduate student from Charleston, South Carolina. She is a recipient of the Wake Forest University Presidential Scholarship for Music, studying with Dr. Bryon Grohman. She intends to major in Biology and minor in Music. 

Katherine has been singing in choirs for nine years, and singing classically for four years. In high school, Katherine participated in the Wando High School Show Choir. In her senior year, she received the Marilyn J. Austin Scholarship Award from the Wando High School music department.

She was accepted into the South Carolina Allstate Choir in 2020, 2021, and 2022. Currently, Katherine is a member of the Wake Forest University Chamber Choir, as well as Songbirds, a club dedicated to bringing music to Alzheimer’s patients in the Winston-Salem, NC area. 

She is excited to continue to learn and grow in the WFU Department of Music.

Third Prize: Sarah Bø, cello

Movement I from Cello Concerto No. 1 in A minor, Op. 33 by Camille Saint-Saëns

Sarah Bø is a second year Medicinal Chemistry major and Neuroscience minor, a Presidential Scholar for Music, and the proud recipient of the LaCava-LoDuca Family Music Scholarship and the Marie Thornton Willis & Miriam Carlyle Willis Scholarship.

She has been a cellist for fourteen years and participated in the Rivers Youth Symphony Orchestra as principal cellist, and in the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra. Sarah was a student of Jane Sheena at the Rivers School Conservatory and is a current student of Evan Richey at Wake Forest University. Sarah is principal cellist, and manager of the Wake Forest University Symphony Orchestra’s student board. She is a member of the WFU chamber music program, principal cellist of the Triad Area Medical Orchestra, and teacher-mentor with the WFU chapter of Musical Empowerment.

In addition to music, she is interested in pursuing the sciences and a career in medicine, focusing on the research and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. Sarah is excited to continue as an active participant in the Wake Forest University Department of Music.

Honorable Mention: Medb Glatt, violin

Movement III from Violin Concerto No. 3 in B minor, Op. 61 by Camille Saint-Saëns

Medb Glatt is a sophomore at WFU, studying applied mathematics with a minor in philosophy. She is originally from Knoxville, TN, where her passion for the violin began. She began private lessons in Knoxville under the guidance of Mary Ann Fennell, with whom she worked until college.

In high school, she was an honors orchestra student, serving as concertmaster all four years, and was commemorated as Most Valuable Player her senior year. She also participated in Tennessee’s All-State East and All-State conferences every year of high school. She was a member of the Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra for nine years, and was concertmaster for one of them.

Medb is an active member of the Wake Forest University Symphony Orchestra (WFUSO), where she currently serves as concertmaster and is a Social Media Manager for the WFUSO’s student board. In addition, she takes private lessons with Dr. Jacqui Carrasco, plays in a trio ensemble under the guidance of Dr. Peter Kairoff, is a leader for the Young Life organization, and a member of Kappa Delta sorority.
