Elizabeth Clendinning is Associate Professor of Music at Wake Forest University and founder and director of the university’s Balinese dance and gamelan ensemble, Gamelan Giri Murti. She is a graduate of Florida State University (Ph.D. 2013, M.M. 2009) and the University of Chicago (B.A. 2007). She is author of American Gamelan and the Ethnomusicological Imagination (2020) and co-author Focus: Gamelan Music of Indonesia, 3rd edition (with Henry Spiller; 2022). She has studied gamelan in Indonesia and the United States since 2009.

Who is Gamelan Giri Murti?

Gamelan Giri Murti, or Gamelan of the Enchanted Forest, is the premier ensemble dedicated to Balinese music, dance, and culture. The ensemble meets each Friday from 2:00-3:15 in room M305 in Scales Fine Arts Center at Wake Forest University’s Reynolda campus. We are open to students, staff, faculty and all interested community members! No experience needed. We’d love for you to join us!
