Percussion

Dr. Mitch Greco is a percussionist-ethnomusicologist whose focus is the pedagogy in world music ensembles and the cognitive processes in developing bimusicality (i.e. fluency in a second musical language). He is dedicated to respectfully playing and teaching non-western music traditions to provide meaningful musical and cultural experiences to American students and audiences. His work bridges ethnomusicology with music transmission and performance (i.e. theory with application).

Greco is also well-practiced in popular and classical music, his primary focus is solo and chamber ensemble repertoire for multiple percussion. He often utilizes hand drumming and multiple percussion for accompanying dance classes, and he currently serves as a staff accompanist at UNCSA.

Greco holds a B.M. in Music Performance and a B.A. in History from SUNY Fredonia, a M.A. in Ethnomusicology from Kent State University, a M.M. in Music Performance from Appalachian State University, and a D.M.A. in Music Performance from West Virginia University. He studied extensively under Dr. Kay Stonefelt and Dr. Rob Falvo (percussion), Dr. Kazadi wa Mukuna (ethnomusicology) and the late Bernard Woma (African percussion). His previous post was as Associate Professor of Music at West Liberty University (Wheeling, WV).
